About This Course

A thorough introductory walkthrough of materials and shaders in UDK, ranging from very basics to advanced!

Volume 1

In this video we'll take an introductory look at UDK's material editor. Once we've covered the basics of importing textures and creating our own materials we'll dive into creating some of the more common types of materials you'll encounter in today's games. We'll be creating metal surfaces with reflection, glass, blended materials such as rock and moss, a holographic animated material, and lastly realistic water, complete with animation, reflections and depth based effects.

Volume 2

Continuing where we left off on Materials Volume 1, Bill Kladis takes us through additional materials inside of UDK! We'll start with understanding and creating a "parent" material as we cover Material Instancing, dive into animated Flipbooks, discuss Opacity and how it works, explore how to apply a "real" video or movie to your assets, and then dive into an advanced material creating a customized and complex animated sequence!

Volume 3

Continuing from Materials Volume 2, Bill Kladis takes us through even more advanced materials inside of UDK! In this course we tackle the Elements! We cover "Depth Bias Alpha" on water, showing how to cause the normals to bend around an object, we show how to make a convincing Lava material flow down a stream and move along a path with awesome distortion effects, then move on to the motherload - procedural ice and snow on an object that points "up" in the direction of the object!

This course is for a very old version of unreal engine. The person does not really explain why he is putting a node and what is the work of the node. But the main issue is, of course, unreal engine has advanced considerably, material settings have changed considerably since this course was recorded. If you want teach materials, the tutorials need to be revised to the latest version of unreal engine. Otherwise, this is just a waste of money.

Despite the fact that the course is very old, most of the information is still relevant. The teacher handles everything very well, quickly and clearly enough. For me, the only drawback is that very weak explanations are given for some key nodes (like Camera Vector, Dot Product), and you have to spend a lot of time on independent study.
The rest of the course is really cool - absolutely all the examples (materials) have a complex structure, but at the same time are used everywhere in games.
I got a great insight into creating common complex materials inside UE.
And I can say that oldschool teachers from 3DMotive are still rock! The knowledge gained is invaluable. Especially in comparison with modern cources that will not teach you anything practical.

Would be better if it was updated for UE4

This course is very outdated. A lot of the processes have changed in Unreal Engine. It recording appears to have been made on a Windows XP system.
