I used this tutorial from a beginner's point of view. I have a moderate understand of C# and wanted to use it in Unity. So far the course has focused on developing the texture atlas generator plugin which, while useful and insightful, has felt like a very niche topic of game development, rather than a introductory to the basics of making a 2D game in Unity.

The course did not quite live up to my expectation.
The beginning was very slow and focussed completely on the creation of the atlases. Then when it came to the actual creation of the game, the explanations were very rushed. In fact I lost track in the last phase and did not feel guided any more.

75% of this course is not relevant anymore because of 2d support in the newer version of Unity.

I think think course was too much on creating the Atlas Texture and too little on making the actual game. And I don't know why the project even started in 3D (could be that 2D in Unity came after the course was made)

Unity 4.3 came with its own 2D workflow, Sprite renderer, editor, etc. So that makes this course slightly outdated BUT the author took great pain to explain WHY and HOW he does things the way he does, this is very good. He could have just go straight away creating atlas and importing them but he choose instead to explain why we need to do so. The atlas generator script alone is worth purchasing this course. The other scripts has been rendered unnecessary by Unity 4.3 though. Due to changes in Unity 4.3 some of his steps and codes won't work out of the box (mouse cursor, screen size, etc). But that can be a good thing since it forces you to think and search for the solution yourself. Think of it like assignments given by your teacher. I was able to make the game work with small tinkering and a few google searches. Highly recommended for beginners in Unity3D!

I ma glad that Alan was able to explain some of the very basics of 2D textures, Orthographic projection, AtlasTextures and how all this adds up to performance.. I have been working with Obj-C for last couple years, and have been lost and did not knew where to start in Unity development ..

Awesome tutorial. I am pretty confident and know a lot about writing custom plugin's as well for the Unity Engine. Thanks Alan.

Compared to other Unity courses, this course is not extensive. For example, nothing about sprites and 2D physics which is very important to make a decent 2D games. However, a lot of students who have never done 2D in Unity may find it useful for setting up the environment and to correctly import the 2D assets. But you should not expect after the course to be ready to do anything 2D that involves a character that moves or interacts with the environment. 3 stars.
