I was quite disappointed with this course, chiefly because the instructor waffles on at such great length that I was able to have the videos running at 2x speed and still follow along without having to pause very often. Compared to another, and in my opinion much better, course on GMS I took (taught by Benjamin Anderson), it's somewhat unfortunate that this course often uses the drag-and-drop method rather than teaching the far more useful Game Maker Language (which the instructor here erroneously refers to as 'scripts', a different function altogether). There are also some rather dubious decisions made in creating the game itself; the main one I noticed was having to laboriously place the enemies in the room, meaning the game was the same every time, rather than using the quite simple method of having an enemy spawner, but there was also a complete lack of coverage on the parenting and inheritance system that's so useful in GMS, and certainly not beyond the grasp of a beginner. Finally it's a somewhat of a let down that several features (load/save, powerups) are hinted at by the assets supplied but not even the slightest clue is given as to how to implement these - the novice student is going to be put off by this lack of explanation.

I did enjoy this course and I made my version of this, however, you rushed it and you didn't finish some parts of the game like load game, save game, exit game, and how do you make transition from "mission complete" to next level and some other things. I would say this is an introduction to game maker studios and not so much of a game. When you say build a complete side-scrolled you should go through each step that you have created and you didn't.

Nice course that covers the basics of handling Gamemaker with the drag and drop interface as well as a tiny bit of scripting

This person is good at explaining what is happening, how it is happening, and when to use certain things. He, sadly, teaches you the MOST easiest way to do something. I say sadly because he uses certain tactics that can only be used in that certain area and is VERY difficult to implement other useful things. For example, I had to break my head for a couple of minutes to figure out how to reset the game when the player dies/wins. I have a decent amount knowledge is GMS, so it took me a couple of minutes to know what to do. For someone with a not a lot of knowledge would have a hard time knowing what to do. Also, this Course is incomplete, he DOES NOT teach you on how to implement code for the Save and Load button. Someone posted saying to show how to......that question/post was 2 years ago. 2 years ago!
TL;DR
So, that is why it is getting 3.5 stars because it is an okay course, but incomplete.

Quick, easy to listen to, easy to understand, you'll get your game going in no time! Lessons end a little abruptly, though.
