Enhance your GameMaker Studio 2 skills by building an RPG

Welcome to Make An RPG With GameMaker Studio 2.

In this course we will build an RPG consisting of commonly used features from other games.

We will create a player, that will be able to run around and attack enemies. Later on we will build

a smart enemy that follows around your player that will be later on enhanced as the boss in the game.

GameMaker Studio 2 is a great engine for building 2D RPG games; since, it gives you the tools to not only produce a decent game, but also makes it easier for you to understand your own and other people's work.

We will also build a world that you can explore, in the course, I leave it up to you to make the world as detailed as you want, but we will go over how to use tilemaps to build the world.

This course is for intermediate GameMaker Studio 2 users. if you already have knowledge in GameMaker Language and know how the game engine works, this course is for you.

We will use many of the features that GameMaker Studio 2 has to offer!

If you are forgetful, we will recap most of the important things in GameMaker Studio 2 for an hour in the beginning.

After taking this course, you should know how to implement these features into your game.

  • Tilesets for the world of your game

  • Finite State Machines (enumerators)

  • A fully functional player

  • An enemy

  • A controller object that stores data across all rooms

  • Open chests and have your players hold up the item for a couple of seconds

  • Unlimited alarms

You'll receive the GameMaker Studio 2 project file for the game at the end of the course.

Tutorial is out of date.

Instructor clearly is not following any prepared plan, he is winging it.

I gave up early on when I could not figure out how to find menus he was using that no longer exist.

I bought this tutorial on steep discount ($12, I think - however much I spent, I may as well have just burned it.)

I also wasn't pleased to have found out AFTER purchasing it that the instructor assumed we already knew how to make games with GMS 2.

I've made games in Unity/VS before, but it was not clear to me before purchasing the tutorial that it was not going to tell me how to use the application.

Maybe, since I already paid for the thing, I'll come back and try again after I've already made the game I'm trying to learn to make, but that seems a little silly.

I'm sorry for giving it 2.5 stars. First, I think that you're talking too fast. Second, the screen that recorded is too wide and you're not using the magnifier program to zoom it to help the audience understand your lecture. The third is when you're trying to import sprite (at part 6 ) you're like hiding something from us and the audience are look at unrelevant window while you're trying to access your image.

They are no longer a company and their Tutorials aren't fully fleshed out. Usually, you would expect the code to work however, there is a mistake in how the code of some sections is written that could clearly be avoided if the instructors' demonstration fully explored the implemented code in action.

So far, it's helpful, but it seems the presentation is really unprepared. A plus though, the instructor mentions that this is for more advanced users. Which implies that you can fill in the gaps with what you know. I agree, but the presentation could have had a little more preparation.

When you are looking to make an RPG to show off to your friends, it's okay.
It does not have enough explanations for a beginner to follow, and too little substance for intermediates. It includes long sessions of coding and testing whilst not explaining what code does. If you do not know what "i" is used for it's probably not for you.
I recommend checking out the tutorials by mr. Shaun Spalding.

As stated in the introduction video this tutorial series is designed for adept gamemaker 2 users. However; the video format is very confusing. Were the video is titled "Setting up the Tileset" the view/ student is instead told to set up a camera then later showed how to set up the tileset. It would be better to add that "Setting up Player Camera" to the title to avoid misunderstanding. Moreover; the constant tangents and use of the Manual make to teacher look very unprofessional. I do enjoy the videos and will continue watching and hope for much more professional content in the future.
