About This Course

Learn how to Create an Environment Concept Art for Films and Games using Photoshop

Instructor Info

Leo Li is currently working as a Concept Artist in Ubisoft and had worked on games such as Far Cry Primal and Watch Dogs 2.  He had also completed his own personal comic book which contains 160 color illustration pages and took him years to make for his company Creative Gear Design. His all time favorite game is The Witcher 3 and Assassin's Creed because he found the storytelling and lighting amazing and truly breathtaking. He also love to watch movies that show great cinematography, storytelling and interesting composition and design elements. His favorite movies are Blade Runner, Perfume, Raging Bull, and The Untouchables. His advice for students just starting out in the industry is to respect and try ways to interact with the artists who had valuable experience and learn from them. He also believes that it is important to keep up with the latest trends and the most current production workflow. Leo loves digital painting and art but his second biggest interest is creating music as he sees it as very similar to painting where you can create mood and narrative that connects with the audience.

Course Info

In this course, Leo shares his experience on how a production level keyframe illustration is made.  He shows you how to create a keyframe cinematic illustration painting from start to finish. He goes over different lighting techniques, color palettes, how to explore and achieve good composition by modifying image structures and different subjects within the image quickly and efficiently. He demonstrates how he creates values and color for the painting, sets the tone by utilizing a variety of temperature and mood, and build a concept ready for story telling and selling ideas.

I am taking classes using the translation function.
This is the evaluation after watching Section 2-2.
Unlike other instructors' courses, this course does not reveal the meaning of the translated texts.
And there is no explanation of which tool is used to draw.
As a result, it is unfortunate that I cannot understand what kind of theory the instructor is drawing.

Leo is a skilled artist. In his course (this one) he takes the student through his painting process and narrates his thinking process. So its not very organized in a way that his knowledge is easily picked up by the listener. For the beginner this means lots of good information could be totally missed because there's no emphasis on foundational verses stylistic/artistic choices, all that he shares carries the same weight, granted that might be just my personal take on it and may or may not be shared by others. It just feels like the course was just him painting and narrating it then giving the video chapters titles and its done.
That approach is valid and may work for some people. Personally it does not, I do find value in watching a pro do their thing and having them narrate it. But that's not why I bought this course. I bought this course for instruction on Cinematic Illustration. Perhaps I read things in the course description that's not there because I was expecting something more about the compositional side of Cinematic illustration. That's what bought the course for, I wanted in depth exploration on cinematic compositional design for illustration. The first video chapter has Composition in the title name but in the video Leo hardly scratches the surface of the massive topic that is Composition and it's not even geared to cinematic composition. Leo's art has cinematic composition that is clear, but after the first video I didn't get anything out of it. I just think he needs to take more time and make a list of specific points (about cinematic composition) that really highlight the difference between regular composition and cinematic, then hammer them home so by the end the student will have learned something. That is if the course is actually about Cinematic composition. If the course is just a generic "Watch me paint and you'll learn how to paint good" then the course videos are perfect all that needs to change is the title and course description.

I can't recommend this course. At over 8hrs it is way too long for the subject covered. I could be done in less than half the time. The lecttures are 60 - 100 minutes each! They need to be broken down into much shorter sections. Any good information about techniques is lost amidst an endless stream of talk about any number of topics. It's not a course you can drop back in to, in order to refresh on a specifc topic because there doeasn't seem to be any structure. This could have been a very interesting tutorial but it needs to be completely restructured into smaller segments, with clearly defines topics and techniques, and the whole thing made more concise.

The final artwork was amazing and seeing Leo's process was equally good. He clearly knows his craft and I feel like saw him paint about 10 different painting before he settled which illustrates the freedom we have as digital artists to change our minds. However, I don't feel I really learned any real techniques. I certainly have no idea what buttons were pressed, or what tool was being used at any given point. I would have been happy to see as a YouTube video showing me how a talented artist goes from File->New to resulting art in the same detached way.

More of a "that guy knows his stuff and I like his results" than "hey I can do this now".

The rating is for the teaching style of the instructor who is an AMAZING artist, but as a student I didn't find it too helpful to just watch him draw and explain is process. That was informative, but I would have liked to have these 'lessons' broken up into small sections so that I could practice what I had just seen and build up my own version of his piece as he did his own.

As cool as it was at first seeing work coming to life I kinda became bored just watching him do his thing.

Za dużo 'blah, blah", za mało opisu workflow. Momentami wypowiedź niezrozumiała, w czym nie pomogła błędna, niedokładna transkrypcja.

Early in and not sure yet, but this course seems to include very raw cut-out of an artist’s established process. I find this great, but i could not have learnt sufficient from the course alone. It lacks things like thumbnailing and perspective. But really like the casual vibe so that i dont feel like listening to a teacher but rather exchange thoughts with a friend!
