About This Course

Create a track that has the authenticity of a record from the early to mid 1980's

This Ableton Live course focuses on the genre of the mid 1980's which was a combination of Electronic Soul and Funk, with a Dance feel to it.

Here you will learn the concepts of this genre by installing the correct VST synths at no extra cost, and learn how to select the right combination of sounds and effects in order to produce a 1980's Electronic Funk record.

Using the Drum machine sounds you will program in beat patterns and also learn and perform certain chord progressions and lead lines and melodies to get the actual feel for this track that sounds like it could have been recorded in 1985.

From the very start you will take advantage of the techniques I have applied in quick and easy to follow tutorials. You will also learn a wide variety of skills from using effects and automating these to further your production skills.

You will gain experience in arrangement and in equalising and mixing your song for a polished version that will be ready for mastering.

The whole idea is to give you the skills and the techniques to then go ahead and produce your own track in this style by using these plug ins and drum machine sounds.

Lessons are broken down into short tutorials and will focus on the following.

1. installing VST Synths and selecting the correct sounds.

2. programming Drum beats.

3. Creating an intro.

4. Arrangement skills.

5. Learn how to play chords and melodies

6. Program additional drum patterns for a solo.

7. Use automation and effect plug ins to create authenticity.

8. Mixing and equalising your track.

  • They will gain insight into the correct sounds to use for this type of music. They will learn specific techniques within Ableton that complement this genre of music. Also the learner will learn how to play chords and musical notation on the keyboard.

Not 80's funk per se but more of a modern house track with influences from electro funk. Plus there is too little explanation of the general ideas of what makes it funk and too much just reconstructing this particular track.

So far i learn new stuff but things are not well organized and we work and setups thats already done not from scratch, also for example EQ EIGHT setup was already having a low pass filter but that wasn't mentioned it took me a while to get it specially that im not so familiar with Ableton..but the effort and materials are so appreciated im still discovering everything.

Rob (the mentor) dropped his job like a Prof. Awesome! Anything that is needed to absolve the course is provided. You don't have to buy extra stuff. Moreover it's no problem to follow the tutorial even if you're using another DAW or English isn't your native language. Rob is experienced, has clean phonetics and you can get on well with his speech comprehension. The course is subdivided logically and clever. In addition you can learn a bunch of production techniques inside the chapters to produce your tracks more diversified. That this in turn arouse curiosity to keep on watching. ***Abolute recommendable for intermediate or advanced producers, and every real-keeper of the 80's vibe.***

NOTE: Profound knowledges about music theory and of your DAW are the course prerequisites! (NOT recommendable for beginners!)
