I wish the songwriting section would be more planned so the instructor just has to teach what he did and I think some parts of the course are a bit too repetitive.

Overall good beginner course to music theory. Unfortunately longer than necessary.

Something I didn't like about this course was the repetition over and over and over again. I take notes. So, I really don't need to hear the same thing over and over again. It's just such a waste of time. This also made me feel like Tomas didn't really think about a good structure for the course. He seemed to be bogged down every now and then. It seemed like he just sat down and hit record without having any plan. Just keep it short and on point and prepare the lesson before you start recording.

Another thing that really bothered me was that Tomas counts the semitones in a wrong way. One semitone up means going up a half step and not staying on the note like Tomas teaches for the first count. He says going up 5 semitones, then 4 to get a major chord while starting your first count on the base note. That's just wrong. If I count 5 and 4 semitones the right way I would get C - F - A instead of the correct notes C - E - G. So, the correct numbers to remember are 4 and 3 to get the major chord, as well as 3 and 4 for the minor chord. Please use the correct semantics!

The last thing that was a bit annoying was that his face was covering parts of what he was showing. It's enough to have a voice in the background. There doesn't have to be someone to look at all the time.

I don't wanna be just criticising. So, here is what I liked:
- the different patterns for getting major and minor scales and chords
- the patterns for the different chords in the major and minor scales
- Tomas' passion for teaching
- keeping it simple
- showing examples
- showing the whole process of writing drums, bass and pads as well as their arrangement

All in all I would still recomment this course especially to total beginners who want to learn more about music theory and why it's important to know.

The version of Ableton used is quite dated (Ableton 9, I believe), and so a lot of the music theory tools and features for Electronic Producers now in Ableton 11/12 (pretty much all DAWs now) were missing. It was fair enough as a general beginning music theory course. But it lacks integrated information about the tools Electronic Producers have available in Ableton and other DAWs now.
