About This Course

Walk through all the steps of font creation. Learn how to choose a font with 100% confidence.

This course is divided in two parts. One about designing fonts and other about choosing fonts.

Design Your Own Fonts: From Paper to Screen
To design a font might look like an overwhelmingly tedious and extremely difficult task, and in a way it is. No magic bullets here. However there are ways to speed up the process as well as to make it fun!
In this class the Type Designer Natanael Gama will teach you how to create your own fonts without going nuts. From paper sketching all the way to export the digital font file. The only thing required for this class is a bit of courage. Remember that the bigger the challenge the bigger the reward. To type your own font can be an epiphanic experience!

Pick the Right Font: When to Choose Comic Sans Over Helvetica, And Much More
Nowadays there are thousands of fonts available for you to choose from. How can you know which one to choose for your next project? What’s the difference between a web-font and desktop font? How to pair fonts? Which fonts are more suitable for long strings of text? What kind of font design works better in a small font size? Or even the million dollar question: What’s the problem with Comic Sans?
Those questions and many others are answered by the type designer Natanael Gama in this class. Whether you are graphic designer, or web designer, or even if you just like to play with typography, this class will boost your capacity to make wiser and more effective typographic choices.

Let's do it?

Natanael one day decided to play with fonts and never stopped. Inspired by the typography classes while taking his degree in graphic design and multimedia in ESAD.CR he started drawing Exo. It was a successful project on kickstarter and is part of the Google Fonts Library. Since then he has already released two more types via Google Fonts, Cinzel and ...

Honestly? The worst purchase on Udemy I ever made.
I wouldn't even call it a course- it's a bunch of TikTok like videos showing screen recording of the "teacher" doing something fast without too much explanation.
There is no resources, explanations are vague and lacking of any real value.
I believe Udemy should ban such pseudo- courses.
I would summarize content like that: Buy a Glyphs and try to follow my rapid videos (if you can) and listen to my background music.
At this moment I want my money and wasted time back.

This course is more like "watch me work" than a learning experience. Could've done better if there was no paid, mac only software involved with some clear explanations on the technical aspect of font designing like fundamentals related to serif, sans, monospace, ligatures, file formats, etc.

Great course! I'm a designer who always wanted to know how professionals create their fonts. I had an idea but I wanted to confirm the step-by-step and I'm pretty happy because the classes meets my expectations. I don't have Glyphs but you can do everything through illustrator if you are advanced with the pen tool.

So great to hear Natanael's take on type design & selection. While efficient in his presentation, I do crave more! It would be great to hear him talk about why/how he evolved Exo into Exo 2.0, for instance. Some additional Glyphs (and similar FontLab) techniques would be helpful. Also, more time spent on the difference between designing a typeface for print vs. screen would have been great. Overall, fantastic!

You won't lose your time here, but I give 4 stars because it was to fast, to much of skipping and "jumping". It will be nice to know the good alternative programs for creating a personal font not only on MAC but on Windows as well. There is a huge gap in understanding a program (unfortunetly it wasn't explained). Anyway It was super interesting and i hope to see this cours more completed and updated. Thank you
